MONEYBALL, IN CINEMAS TODAY.
I went to University to become a sports coach. On
discovering that I would be studying an ‘Analysing Sports Performance’ module
in my second year, I decided to do some summer research into what this might
involve. During this research I repeatedly came across a book called Moneyball and so decided that buying and
reading it was a must.
This book completely changed my outlook on how I viewed
sport and had a huge effect on my coaching philosophy, ultimately leading to
establishing Optimum Sports Analysis.
Therefore I feel I at least owe it a mention on this site.
I often get asked what I do as a form of employment and,
after stating that I am a Sports Performance Analyst, I get puzzled looks in
return with further explanation leading to further confusion. I
would love to tell people to read Moneyball
to aid this understanding, and I
sometimes do, but the reality is I know they won’t – who wants to read a book
about Maths and a sport that they don’t even know how to play?
With the release of the Moneyball
movie today however I feel my quest has been aided somewhat and my hopes have
been renewed.
So if anyone reading this wants to know a bit more about
what we, as a company, do, where we got our inspiration from or how we may be
able to help you as an individual, a coach or a team; then please go and watch Moneyball.
